AN INTRODUCTION TO PRANAYAMA AND MEDITATION TECHNIQUES:
This workshop will allow students to familiarize themselves with basic pranayama and meditation techniques. Although both practices are valuable in their own right we will journey through a few pranayama (breathing) techniques to start calming the mind and then move through a few styles of meditation.
Pranayama is the ancient art of controlling the breath, which is the source of our prana, or life force. Mastering pranayama techniques can help cleanse the body while cultivating concentration, the first step to any form of meditation as mind and breath are so closely connected. We will then move through a few meditation techniques. Meditation is a skill which involves practice- to cultivate awareness. By patiently learning to sit with the mind we discover greater calm, clarity, and contentment. Meditation techniques have been proven to have many benefits and enhance overall mindfulness and health.
So, whether you are new or accustomed to pranayama exercises and meditation techniques in a group setting, this session will allow you to deepen your knowledge while introducing you to their many benefits. The workshop is free and open to all. No prior experience is necessary. As you will be mostly sitting, comfortable clothing is advised.

KIRTAN:
This workshop will introduce students to the yogic tradition of chanting in a group setting, called Kirtan. During Kirtan we chant ancient Sanskrit mantras in a repetitive call and response manner. As we flood the space with our voices the vibration that is produced has the very powerful ability to calm the mind, open the heart and release fear and tension from the body. It can serve as a purifying and up-lifting experience and offers the benefits of a yoga class or meditation, without the struggle of concentration.
I will begin the workshop by offering a brief history of Kirtan. I will then introduce each mantra, followed by call-and-response chanting accompanied on the harmonium. The journey will end with a short meditation. The workshop is free and open to all. No prior Kirtan experience is necessary. As you will be sitting, comfortable clothing is advised.
